Why convert PNG to JPG?
PNGs are lossless and can be 5-10x larger than JPGs of the same photo. For photographic content where you don't need transparency, JPG is much smaller and faster to load.

Why a PNG screenshot looks worse as a JPG
JPG compresses images in 8x8 pixel blocks and smooths out detail the eye is less sensitive to. That trade-off is nearly invisible on a photo of a landscape or a face, where colors already blend gradually. It's very visible on a screenshot. Sharp text edges, thin UI borders, and flat color fills get slightly smeared, and you can often see faint blocky halos around letters at normal compression settings. If the source PNG has text, icons, or hard-edged graphics, keep it as PNG or convert to WebP instead. WebP handles flat color and text far more cleanly than JPG.

Is the PNG to JPG conversion lossless?

What happens to transparent areas when I convert PNG to JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixel in the source PNG gets filled with a solid background color, typically white. JPG can only describe fully opaque pixels. If the transparent PNG is a logo meant to sit on a colored background, converting it to JPG usually leaves a visible white box around it once placed anywhere other than a white page. If you need the image to work on any background, stay with PNG or convert to WebP. Both keep full transparency.
