Why convert GIF to BMP?
GIF's 256-color palette is already the ceiling on this image, and converting to BMP doesn't add any of that range back. It only strips out GIF's own compression and writes every pixel out raw, which is why the BMP ends up considerably bigger than the GIF for no visual gain beyond compatibility with older software, embedded systems, or industrial tools that won't read GIF directly.
Tips
- Animated GIFs export as a single still frame. Motion is not preserved.
- The 256 colors from the source GIF are the ceiling here. BMP can't add color detail GIF never had.
Removing compression, not adding color
Converting to an older, simpler format like BMP can sound like it would degrade the image further. In file size the opposite happens: BMP has no compression at all, so it takes the GIF's decoded pixels and writes every one of them out directly, which almost always makes the file bigger than the GIF, sometimes by a wide margin. What BMP can't do is add back any of the color range the GIF's 256-color palette already left out. The visual result matches the GIF exactly. Only the storage method changes.
